2024 Wyoming Spills

Jun 16, 2025

Operators in Wyoming reported 972 spills in 2024, containing 1,808,997 gallons of oil and drilling-related materials. That’s 29 percent more volume than was reported spilled in 2023 and 33 percent more spills. Meanwhile, oil production in Wyoming in 2024 was up around 11 percent compared to 2023, indicating more volume was spilled per gallon produced in 2024 than in 2023.

Almost 40 percent of all spills occurred in just two counties—Campbell and Converse, which are located in the oil-rich Powder River Basin—and half of all spills were caused by just five companies.

Carbon Creek Energy spilled 321,409 gallons of drilling-related liquid in 2024, the most of any operator in Wyoming. EOG spilled the second-most, at 187,091 gallons. Notably, Carbon Creek reported spilling over 11 times more drilling-related liquid in 2024 as compared to 2023.

A few notes about the data

Since spill data is self-reported by the oil and gas companies responsible for the spills, the true number of spills and volume of spilled material in Wyoming is could be much higher than those included in this report. Wyoming does not make spill data available to the public. CWP began analyzing spill data from Wyoming in 2017, which is why the historic data in this report only goes back to that year. Finally, the methodology used to calculate this year’s report differs from that of past years’ reports. Therefore, data from this year’s report should not be used in combination with data from prior years. Similarly, data should not be compared across states, as reporting requirements and processes differ state to state. The data in this report was shared via email with CWP by the Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission in on March 10, 2025.
