2021 Wyoming Spills

Mar 30, 2022

Wyoming’s oil and gas spills increased by about five percent in 2021, from 613 to 642. Around half of all spills occurred in just two counties—Campbell and Converse—and were caused by just five companies. Wyoming saw a very slight increase in producing wells in 2021 compared to 2020, which could factor into the slight increase in spills in the state.

Oil production in 2021 was down 14 percent from its pre-pandemic level in Wyoming, and there were around 20 percent fewer spills in 2021 than there were in 2019, indicating a possible decrease in Wyoming’s rate of spills per barrel of oil produced.
