STATEMENT on Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, the Outdoor Economy, and National Monuments

Apr 25, 2017

DENVER—The Outdoor Industry Association released a new report today that reveals the outdoor economy drives $887 billion in consumer spending and 7.6 million American jobs.

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke attended OIA’s event at the National Press Club this morning, 24 hours before President Trump is expected to sign an executive order laying the groundwork for an attack on America’s national monuments and the Antiquities Act, our national monuments law.

In response, Jennifer Rokala, executive director at the Center for Western Priorities, said:

“While Secretary Zinke is paying lip service to our public lands, President Trump is preparing to launch an assault on our national monuments. An executive order that undermines national monuments is not only an attack on America’s heritage and history, it’s an attack on the millions of jobs and hundreds of billions of dollars that depend on our parks, monuments, and other public land.”
