Coalition to Rally Ahead of Obama Administration’s Coal Listening Session Calling for a Fair Share Return from Coal Mining on Public Lands

Denver, Dozens of Coloradans, representing a diverse coalition of ranchers, sportsmen, environmentalists and taxpayers, will hold a rally outside of the Obama Administration’s coal listening session on Tuesday, calling for a fair share return from coal mining on national public lands in Colorado.

Coal leasing and development on public lands is rife with loopholes and handouts that benefit a few companies at the expense of Coloradans.

Royalty rates for coal mined on public lands have not been updated in decades. Outdated rates cost Colorado taxpayers millions in revenue that could be spent on roads and schools. Not only are the royalty rates outdated, but recent investigations reveal coal companies are using subsidiaries to sell coal to themselves at artificially low prices and avoiding royalty payments owed to taxpayers. Its a lose-lose subsidy that gives coal an advantage over developing forms of energy while also undermining the coal market for those in the industry who play by the rules.

Inside the listening session, more than 100 public lands supporters will be present to share their perspectives on the impact of coal mining on Colorado’s economy, environment and communities.
