2015 Public Lands Oil and Gas Leasing Tracker

National Public Lands That Have Been Leased for Oil and Gas—and Who’s Buying the Leases

The Bureau of Land Management oversees the oil and gas leasing and bidding process on our national public lands. The agency is tasked with determining where drilling occurs and ensuring that taxpayers receive their fair share on public resources.

During the first quarter of 2015, the BLM has leased 166,211 acres of public lands to oil and gas companies in seven Western states. This represents a significant portion of the 171,775 acres of public lands that were leased across the country since the New Year.

25 percent of the lands leased in the seven Western states – or nearly 41,000 acres – were acquired with a minimum bid of only $2.00 per acre.

In 2014, oil and gas companies leased a total of 606,722 acres of national public lands in seven Western states.  Approximately 15 percent of the lands leased in the seven Western states – or 94,517 acres – were acquired with a minimum bid of only $2.00 per acre.

The Public Lands Oil and Gas Leasing Tracker data is compiled from Bureau of Land Management “Final Sales Results,” released following each lease sale.
